I
was born February 2, 1951, Groundhog Day, in Eugene, Oregon. I've
been looking for my shadow ever since. I grew up in Salem, Oregon,
in a middle class family with an Architect for a Patriarch. He thought
in some "out of the box" ways and I picked up some of
those ways of thinking while very young.
After
turning down an appointment to the Air Force Academy, I attended
the University of Oregon, pre med, until I figured out it was
"not for me."
A few more adventures and I ended up as
a designer for a stained glass company where I transitioned into
my own firm for 10 years until starting my glass blowing journey.
Glass
blowing is an amazing adventure. It takes a very long time to
acquire enough skills be able to do whatever one wants. I've come
far enough to be able to create glass art "far enough out
on the edge" to nearly please myself, which is what I am
after. I blow glass pieces that are sculptural, abstract and interesting;
executed in a glass craftsman way that makes my glass pieces beautiful
and fulfilling for whoever acquires them.
I've been blowing glass for about 25 years,
which seems a long time to me. I've had solo exhibitions, been
in group shows, done commissions, and made some wonderful glass
and screwed up a lot and I'm still at it.
I've
been married for over 30 years, have two daughters, three grandchildren,
and enough friends to make life interesting. We livemin Skamokawa,
Washington, on 30 acres of mostly forest with too many llamas,
dogs cats, chickens, and neighbors' cows to be reasonable. I am
an elected official who goes door to door in election years trying
to get people to vote for anyone else but me!
I
blow glass four days a week and welcome visitors most of the time.
I've developed some new technologies for glass blowing furnaces
and glass casting which also keeps me busy. All in all, plenty
is going to .. Life is good.
